The long way
In 1999 the Sanoner family, owners of the Hotel ADLER in Ortisei, acquired the old Mezdì from the bankruptcy assets of a Genoese real estate company and immediately set to work on various plans for renovating the hotel.
The basic principle in all cases was to replace the single hotel structure with an ensemble comprising several smaller wooden buildings modelled on the old Tyrolean mountain dairy huts so that they would blend in with the unique scenery of Alpe di Siusi.

The plans for the Mezdì quickly triggered a fundamentalist dispute. Opponents formed citizen action groups; the local authorities introduced a mixture of regulations – some to facilitate and some to prevent the project – and the media did their bit as well.
